Sidebar option — Aoife could enroll OSU + KCC via Degree Partnership Program (concurrent enrollment) and live in Hawaiʻi while taking most credits at KCC. Not directly comparable to the three full-degree four-year options, so excluded from main comparison and side-by-side table.

Employment & Work-Study
KCC has a notably strong student-employment infrastructure for a community college, anchored in Federal Work-Study, the Employment Prep Center, and built-in industry pipelines in its flagship programs. The infographic above summarizes the dollar figures; this panel lays out the action steps.
Three highest-leverage moves
- File FAFSA by March 1, 2026 with KCC selected (school code 001613). This is the single move that unlocks Federal Work-Study eligibility.
- Build a Handshake profile the day she starts at KCC at uhcc.joinhandshake.com. Most KCC students don't, so an active profile gets noticed.
- If pursuing culinary or nursing as her major, the program-internal externship pipeline is more valuable than any general job-board posting. Ask the program coordinator about hotel/hospital partner placements during admission.
Top student employer categories
Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton, Halekulani, Sheraton (Waikiki). KCC culinary connections lower the friction.
Abundant FOH and BOH; CIP graduates have direct entrée.
Ala Moana Center is the world's largest open-air mall — abundant student-friendly retailers.
CNA + hospital tech jobs; Hawaiʻi has a long-standing healthcare worker shortage.
Atlantis, Star of Honolulu, beach concessions, surf schools.
UH system (KCC + UH Mānoa + others) hires extensively. SECE portal at hawaii.edu/sece.
DPP-specific notes
- Federal Work-Study eligibility flows through her primary FA partner school. KCC primary → FWS through KCC + SECE. Switch primary to LBCC later → FWS becomes Oregon-side.
- Non-FWS jobs in Honolulu are open regardless of primary partner status.
- CA-resident working in HI: she'd file CA state taxes on worldwide income + HI state taxes (with credit) on HI-earned wages. Paperwork lift, not a blocker.
Transfer Paths — KCC → OSU / LBCC
OSU's DPP is unusually flexible about when and where it gets added. KCC enrollment doesn't lock Aoife into Hawaiʻi; she has at least five viable paths back to Oregon.
Practical timeline (Hawaiʻi year 1 → Oregon years 2-4)
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Spring 2026 | Apply to OSU with DPP marked, KCC as primary partner. Apply to KCC. Apply for UH Mānoa housing as backup. |
| Fall 2026 | Enroll at KCC + OSU DPP (concurrent). Live in Hawaiʻi (UH Mānoa hall, off-campus Kaimuki, or family). |
| Spring/Summer 2027 | Decide whether to stay or move. If moving: file paperwork to change primary DPP partner from KCC to LBCC. |
| Fall 2027 | Move to Corvallis. Enroll at LBCC + OSU DPP. KCC credits already on her OSU transcript — no re-application needed. |
| Years 3–4 | Phase out LBCC, full OSU upper-division at Corvallis. |
Three things to verify before committing
- Can a student switch primary DPP partners mid-degree? (logically yes from the multi-partner provision; confirm)
- What's the credit cap on KCC + LBCC combined toward an OSU degree?
- Does the 10-term clock reset if she switches partners?
Phone: OSU Transfer Admissions (541) 737-9472 — confirm all three.
DPP Savings — detailed scenarios
DPP is not a discount. It's a joint-enrollment partnership. The actual savings come from three other levers: (1) cheap CC tuition for the CC years, (2) WUE awarded at OSU (~30% of CA applicants get it), and (3) the rare-but-decisive parent-moves-to-Oregon residency path. Below is what each scenario actually costs over four years, based on OSU's 2026-27 board-approved rates + 5%/yr forward escalation.
Critical caveat for the KCC bridge: KCC charges CA students full non-resident tuition ($8,420/yr) and KCC's published off-campus living cost is $22,856/yr — meaning Year 1 at KCC is more expensive than Year 1 at LBCC. KCC is the right path for Hawaiʻi-the-place reasons, not for cost reasons.
Five 4-year scenarios for a CA-resident student
| Scenario | 4-yr total | Saves vs S1 |
|---|---|---|
| S1. Direct OSU as OOS — baseline | $280,214 | — |
| S2. Direct OSU + WUE (if awarded, 4 yrs maintained) | $195,099 | $85,115 |
| S3. KCC bridge (Y1 KCC → Y2 LBCC → Y3-4 OSU OOS) | $216,578 | $63,636 |
| S4. LBCC bridge + parent moves to OR (Y3-4 OR resident) | $146,020 | $134,194 |
| S5. LBCC bridge alone (no residency conversion) | $209,026 | $71,188 |
Key facts that drive the math
- KCC charges CA students NON-RESIDENT tuition — $8,420/yr T&F + $22,856/yr published off-campus living = $33,831/yr Year 1. KCC is not WUE-eligible.
- LBCC by contrast charges CA at bordering-state rate — $7,733/yr T&F. Year 2 at LBCC is much cheaper than Year 1 at KCC was.
- OSU 2026-27 OOS tuition + fees: $42,459/yr. Years 3-4 at OSU OOS dominates the KCC bridge total.
- WUE = 1.5 × resident base ≈ $22,711/yr T&F at OSU. ~30% of CA applicants get it. Competitive, holistic.
- Oregon residency self-conversion is BLOCKED at full course load. OSU's 8-credit cap presumes >8-credit terms are "for educational purpose" and don't count. Earliest reclass: Spring 2028 if she part-times for a year.
- Parent-moves-to-OR is the only fast residency path — but irrelevant to KCC since KCC living is in Hawaiʻi (parent move from Aptos to OR works for LBCC bridge, not for KCC bridge).
When KCC actually makes sense
- Hawaiʻi as a place matters. Year 1 in Honolulu — Diamond Head, Waikiki, Pacific climate, multicultural food scene — is a different life experience than Albany.
- Culinary or hospitality intent. KCC's Culinary Institute of the Pacific is a real distinguishing program. LBCC's Culinary Arts is good but not equivalent.
- Family in Hawaiʻi who can offer cheaper housing. KCC's $22,856/yr published off-campus is the "no help" estimate; living with family bypasses the housing premium.
- Backup-plan flexibility. KCC keeps OSU active. Switch primary to LBCC after Year 1, or transfer out entirely. The DPP doesn't lock her in.
